Thomas L. Sassman

PEKIN ~ Thomas L. Sassman, 68, of 18875 Illinois Route 9, passed away at 12:30 a.m. Friday, February 13, 2009 at Pekin Hospital.

Born February 25, 1940 in Tazewell County to Lorn and Bessie Faye (Romans) Sassman, he married Karen Kay Johnson on August 19, 1962 in Pekin.  She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Doug (Dr. Donna) Sassman of Pekin; one daughter, Lori Shutt of Pekin; three grandchildren, Erica Shutt, Heidi Shutt and Caleb Shutt, all of Pekin; one brother, Harold (Doris) Sassman of Groveland; three sisters, Darlene (Lloyd) Buttry of Petersburg, Fannie (Everett) Look of Sunnyland and Etta (Delbert) Coggins of Hopedale and his step-mother, Kathleen Sassman of Pekin.  He also leaves five step-brothers and four step-sisters.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Ray Sassman.

He was a United States Army veteran.

Tom worked for the Pekin Park District for 18 years in many different capacities, including superintendent.  He then worked for the City of Pekin as Superintendent of Streets for 18 years.  Following retirement from the city, Tom was the caretaker of Soldwedel Estates for 10 years.

Tom was a former member and past president of the Pekin Chapter of AMBUCS.  He also was a former volunteer of the Central Illinois Dream Factory.

He was a faithful member of Grace United Methodist Church in Pekin.  He also served on the Dillon Cemetery Board.

Tom’s focus was his children and grandchildren and he took great pride in attending their activities.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at Grace United Methodist Church in Pekin.  The Rev. Gary L. Ford will officiate.  Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, February 16, 2009 at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel.  Private burial will be Tuesday afternoon in Dillon Cemetery, with Rev. Henry Miller officiating.
