PEKIN ~ Glatha Marlene Ales, 79, of 1316 Hilltop Dr., passed away at 7 p.m. Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at Pekin Hospital.
Born April 27, 1932 in Maquoketa, Iowa to Frank William and Florence Louella (Caven) McCutcheon, she married John Russell Ales on February 13, 1954 in Maquoka, Iowa.
Surviving are two sons, Jeffrey R. Ales of Los Angeles, California and Gregory A. Ales of Pekin; one daughter, Sherry M. (Tony) Bennett of Pekin; two step-granddaughters, Jessica Bennett of Peoria and Carissa Bennett of Pekin; one step-great-granddaughter, Kamryn Bennett of Pekin; and one sister, Donna M. (Tom) Sherwood of Fulton.
She was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Council of Catholic Women since 1962.
Glatha received her Teacher's Certificate from Mount St. Clare College in Clinton, Iowa in 1952. She then taught full time in Utah, Iowa and Illinois until 1964, when her children were born. She then worked as a substitute teacher and teacher’s aide at Douglas School in Pekin in the 3rd grade until 1984. She later worked for Ponderosa as a cashier, working there for sixteen years, until the restaurant closed in 2002.
Glatha enjoyed reading, walking, and formerly bowling. She also loved vacationing to California.
Her funeral mass will be at 1 p.m. Monday, January 9, 2012 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Father James Pankiewicz will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the mass at the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Pekin. Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin is in charge of arrangements.
