GROVELAND ~ Melvin James Houston, Jr., 53, of Groveland, passed away at 7:02 p.m. Thursday, January 5, 2012 at Munster Community Hospital in Munster, IN. He went home to be with our Lord and Savior in heaven. He will be missed by his loving wife of thirty-three years and beloved sons.
Born March 17, 1958 in Tulsa, OK, he was the son of Riley Herschel and Unice Faye (Mitchell) Moreland. He married Karen Sue Jeffries on October 12, 1979 in Peoria. She survives.
Also surviving are his mother of Vandalia; two sons, Christopher Riley (Jennifer) Houston of Groveland and Joshua Theodore (Lisa) Houston of Pekin; a niece and a nephew whom he raised, Rodney Allen (Deb Jacobson) Smith of Hannibal, MO and Taria Michelle Smith of Peoria; five grandchildren, Allison Renee Houston, Eagen Mychael Houston, Jennelle Lyn Muller, Anja Mishelle Muller and Brynlei Elizibeth Muller; three brothers, Edward Leroy (Kathy Dooley) Houston, Bill (Amy) Houston, both of Vandalia and Rodney (Marilyn) Jeffries of Chippewa Falls, WI and two sisters, Christie (Rob) Carter of Ft. Smith, AR and Teresa C. Smith of Peoria. He also leaves seven nephews and eleven nieces.
He was preceded in death by his father and one sister, Rena L. Maxwell.
Melvin had served in the United States Navy.
During his journey on earth, Melvin had a passion for fishing. He spent countless hours teaching his sons, grandchildren, nephews and nieces the art of fishing. He also enjoyed spending his free time camping and telling stories around a campfire while making smores.
Melvin loved being with his family and drinking his coffee. He worked as an insulator out of Local 17 in Chicago for twenty-three years. His family will always remember the twinkle in his eye, crooked smile and his kind soul.
He was a member of Pekin First Church of the Nazarene.
His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at Pekin First Church of the Nazarene. Pastor W. Lloyd Brock will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Cremation will be accorded following the funeral.
