PEKIN ~ William Alvin Nelson, 88, of Pekin, formerly of Peoria, passed away at 6:50 p.m. Thursday, February 2, 2012 at Pekin Manor.
Born August 16, 1923 in Villisca, Iowa to Leland B. and Elmo (Essington) Nelson, he married Marion Jean Volkens on September 5, 1947 in Peoria. She survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Peter K. (Jan) Nelson of Plymouth, Michigan, Hugh D. (Brenda) Nelson of Poulsbo, Washington and Christopher P. (Michele) Nelson of Pekin; one grandson and three granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister.
William had served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II.
He was a member of First United Presbyterian Church in Pekin, where he had served as an elder.
He attended Notre Dame University, University of Illinois, and later Bradley University, where he earned a Master's degree in Engineering Administration.
He worked as an engineer for Caterpillar, Inc. at the Mossville Engine Division for 30 years, retiring in 1983.
He enjoyed golfing and had been a member of the Society of Value Engineers in Peoria.
His memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 12, 2012 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Rev. Kristie M. Peterson will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Parkview Cemetery in Peoria, where military rites will be accorded by the United States Marine Corps and the Tazewell Area Ceremonial Team.
