PEKIN ~ Gloria Smith, 93, of Pekin, passed away peacefully at 8:15 a.m. on October 2, 2017 at Hallmark House Nursing Center in Pekin.
She was born on May 25, 1924, to Jacob and Fannie Pedersen in Brooklyn, New York. There she met John Smith and they were married on June 16, 1946. Together for 53 years, he preceded her in death in February 2000. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her brother Roy Pedersen, and her sister Doris Stone.
She is survived by her three children: Scott (Christine) Smith of Glenview, IL, Nancy Smith of Pekin, IL, and Jay Smith of Elk Grove Village, IL; two grandchildren: Gregory (Dr. Gloria No) Smith and Thomas (Jori) Smith; and several nieces and nephews.
Following her high school graduation, Gloria worked at New York Life Insurance Company in Manhattan. After their marriage, John and Gloria moved to Pekin and she became a homemaker. She loved the library and worked part-time at the Pekin Public Library in the children’s department. She also spent summers working at the Pekin Park District concession stands. When her children were grown, she returned to full-time work as a library clerk with the Pekin Community High School East Campus library. After her retirement, she became a member of the Pekin Hospital League and volunteered at the League’s Nearly Nu shop for more than 20 years, managing the book department.
Gloria was also a member of the Pekin Woman’s Club and the Tazewell County Retired Teachers Association.
Gloria was a 60-year member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Pekin, serving as a Sunday School teacher and also as a deaconess.
In accordance with her wishes, her body has been donated to science. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2017, 11:30 a.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church in Pekin. There will be no visitation. Family will receive friends following the service at the church.
