Richard L. Sloneker

SOUTH PEKIN ~ Richard Lee “Dick” Sloneker, 88, of South Pekin, passed away at 6:25 p.m. Friday, October 27, 2017 at his home.

Born November 8, 1928 in Congerville to Herbert and Elsie (Irons) Sloneker, he married Donna Lee Gent on November 27, 1948 in Pekin.  She died May 27, 1996.  He was also preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Christopher Gossage; one brother, Donald Sloneker; and one sister, Jean Singley.

Surviving are two sons, Ricky Lee (Nana Beth) Sloneker of South Pekin and Gary Joe Sloneker of LaSalle, Colorado; one daughter, Kennet “Kiki” (Lonnie) Gossage of Jacksonville; three grandchildren, Tammie (Chris) Blevins of Magnolia, Texas, Christopher (Jennifer) Sloneker of Arvada, Colorado, and Tara (Billy) Fogg of Lochbuie, Colorado; five great-grandchildren, Tyler, Jordan, Donna Cassandra, Brooklyn, and Benjamin Carter; one brother, James (Joan) Sloneker of Bloomington; and several nieces and nephews.

Dick worked at Quaker Oats in Pekin for 35 years, retiring in 1986 as powerhouse/maintenance manager.

He was a longtime member of South Pekin Congregational Church, where he was a former elder and trustee, and member of the Men’s Club.  He also had served the church as the chairman of the Ozark Ham & Beans Supper.

He was a former member of the South Pekin Grade School Board of Education, serving as past treasurer.  

Dick enjoyed spending time at his cabin in Mountain Home, Arkansas, fishing, and antiques.  He was an avid woodworker and was known for making rocking horses.  He was a fan of NASCAR and the Chicago Cubs.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.  Pastor Tom Cox will officiate.  Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.  Burial will be at Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.
