11/18/1928 - 10/31/2017
CREVE COEUR ~ Herbert Donald "Don" Armstrong, 88, of Creve Coeur, passed away at 10:25 p.m. Tuesday, October 31, 2017 at his residence, surrounded by his entire family.
Born November 18, 1928 in Mt. Sterling to Otha and Eva (Rigg) Armstrong, he married Carol Richard on November 27, 1949 in Peoria. They enjoyed nearly 67 years of marriage.
Surviving are one daughter, Dawn (Dzung) Dinh of Peoria; one son, Brad Robert (Sandra Marie) Armstrong of East Peoria; five grandchildren, Nicholas Robert (Sara) Armstrong, Keri Marie (Josh) Gillette, Dawn Nicole Armstrong, Scott Michael (Casie) Phegley and Christian Tai Dinh; and six great-grandchildren, Aspen, Morgan, and Mason Armstrong, Carter and Olivia Gillette and Logan Phegley.
He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers, George, James, Maurice, Robert and Norlyn Armstrong.
Don had worked for Celotex (Barrett's Division), retiring at age 48. He later worked for Stuart Warner Industries in Chicago for ten years.
He was an avid hunter and golfer. Over the last ten years, he watched every single Chicago Cubs baseball game, Chicago Bears football game and every golf tournament that was televised. His faithful friend, Louie the cat, enjoyed sitting on his lap and watching along.
A devoted father to Dawn and Brad, he enjoyed watching them grow up and was at every activity they took part in. He never missed anything. Once his children had children of their own, he became his grandchildren's biggest fans, making most every recital, game, or activity of theirs as well.
The family would like to offer a special thank you to the staff at Fresnius Kidney Care in East Peoria, OSF Hospice, and especially Tammy Cheney for their kindness and compassionate care.
A celebration of Don’s life will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Creve Coeur. Pastor Ed Newlan will officiate. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be given to a charity of the donor's choice.
