Oscar M. Irby

PEKIN ~ Oscar Morgan Irby, 93, of Pekin, passed away at 1:05 a.m. Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at his home.

Born October 15, 1924 in Marion, Ohio to Charles and Virgie Lee (Pickett) Irby, he married Wilma Elizabeth Smith on August 4, 1945 in Pekin.  She died January 9, 2016 in Pekin.  He also was preceded in death by his parents; six sisters and four brothers.

Surviving are two sons, Gary M. (Judy) Irby of rural Manito and Robert L. (Susan) Irby of Pekin; one daughter, Jeannie L. DeWitt of Pekin; six grandchildren, Cory (Dawn) Irby, Kevin (Jennifer) Irby, Tim (Amber) Irby, Jenni (Derek) Schulze, all of Pekin, Jeffrey (Stefanie) Irby of Downers Grove and Chris (Laura) DeWitt of Sterling Heights, Michigan and seventeen great-grandchildren.

Oscar worked for Caterpillar, Inc. for 31 years, retiring in 1980 as an inspector in Building LL in East Peoria.  He also drove a school bus for Rankin and Spring Lake Schools for several years.  During the World War II, Oscar worked in a shipyard in California. 

Oscar was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Pekin.  He also was a member of Empire Lodge 126, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Illinois in Pekin.

His family was important to him and he enjoyed woodworking in his shop.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday, December 18, 2017 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.  The Rev. Judy Kennedy will officiate.  Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with Masonic rites conducted at 4 p.m. Burial will be in Woodrow Cemetery in rural Pekin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army for Operating/Social Services at the Pekin Corps., 243 Derby, Pekin, IL 61554.
