Alberta Mae Hackney

PEKIN ~ Alberta Mae Hackney, 87, of Pekin, passed away at 1:47 p.m. Sunday, December 17, 2017 at UnityPoint Health – Pekin.

Born July 24, 1930 in Beaver Dam, Kentucky to Austin and Artelia (Keith) Embry, she married Harry James Hackney on August 30, 1949 in Pekin.  He died August 3, 2016 in Pekin.   She also was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Helen Moore and Hazel Heflin and three brothers, Hayward Embry, James Embry and Kenneth Embry.

Surviving are one daughter, Rebecca “Becki” Rohrs of Pekin; one son, Bob (Christal) Hackney of Manito; two grandchildren, Todd (Tonya) Rohrs of Bloomington and Tamara (Timothy) Evans of East Peoria and five great-grandchildren, Devin, Jake, Connor, Kaleb, and Rebecca.  She also leaves three sisters-in-law, Violet Embry of Plainfield, Neva Sharp of East Peoria and Esther Hackney of Green Valley.

Alberta was employed at Pekin Community High School District 303 as a longtime cafeteria worker and later in the Dragon’s Den.  She also helped raise many children in the family and community through babysitting along with her husband.

She was a member of the Pekin Church of Christ, where she helped coordinate church dinner and the church flowers for many years.

Alberta was devoted to her family, enjoyed attending family gatherings and considered her neighbors as part of her family.  She enjoyed playing card games.  She was an excellent southern style cook and was known for her jams and pickles.

For more than 60 years she portrayed Minnie Pearl at area schools and in shows held at Kentuckiana Kampground near Hopedale.

Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.  Evangelist Jerry Henderson will officiate.  Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.  Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Pekin.
