PEKIN ~ Delores “Dee” Elmore, 87, of Pekin, passed away at 9:18 a.m. Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at her home with her loving family by her side.

Born March 14, 1930 in Pekin to Joseph and Angeline (Gianessi) Ozella, she married Donald Elmore on April 28, 1950 in Pekin.  He died February 17, 1994.  She was also preceded in death by her mother in 1993; father in 1985; and brother, Joe Ozella, Jr. of Pekin, in 2005.

Surviving are her children, Terry (Donita) Elmore and Kristi (Steve) Curto, all of Pekin; four grandchildren, Cortney Bass of Pekin, Kari (Jonny) McMullen of Bloomington, Kristin Elmore and Kylie Elmore, both of Pekin; four great-grandchildren, Hayley (Chris) Adolphson of Peoria, Carson Bass of Pekin, and Annika McMullen and Emily McMullen, both of Bloomington; one sister, Sharlene Homerin of Pekin; and one brother, Gene Ozella of Peoria.

Dee was of the Catholic faith and a life-long member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church.  She loved spending time with her family, sewing, and working in her yard.  She enjoyed getting together with her family to cook their favorite Italian foods, and loved practicing traditional Italian family customs.  She loved working on crossword puzzles and spoiling her grandchildren and her “grandpups” every chance she got.

Dee and her husband enjoyed traveling together. They had the distinction of having traveled in all of the original 48 states. They were planning a trip to Alaska when her husband became ill in 1993.

For 23 years, Dee was a hairdresser. She began her career at Lou’s Beauty Shop in 1960 and continued her career in her home at Dee’s Beauty Shop until 1983.

Dee was an avid sports fan and followed the Chicago teams – Chicago Bears, Chicago Bulls and especially the Chicago Cubs.  For decades, she didn’t miss a Cubs game – whether it was on TV or on the radio. She was lucky to see the Cubs win four games during the 2016 season and was elated when they finally won the World Series. Dee recently went on a private tour of Wrigley Field, where she was able to sit in the dugout and have pictures taken with the Championship trophy.

Her funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin with Father Michael Andrejek as the celebrant.  Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Saturday at the church.  Burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.

Arrangements are by Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 4234 North Knoxville Avenue, Peoria, IL 61614, to be used specifically for Mesothelioma research.

Dee has requested that everyone dress casually and come to her visitation and funeral Mass wearing their favorite sports gear.
