Vernon N. Franklin

PEORIA ~ Vernon Newton Franklin, 90, of Peoria, passed away at 1:14 a.m. Thursday, January 25, 2018 at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria.

Born February 27, 1927 in Denver, CO to James William Newton and Bessie Lee (Osburn) Franklin, he married Oleta Ailene Cansler on April 10, 1948 in Buffalo, MO. She survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Brent (Christy) Franklin and Kevin (Debbie) Franklin, both of Peoria and Darryn (Judy) Franklin of Lincoln, NE; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Bill, Wayne, John and Alman Franklin and one sister, Mary Ann Bruce.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Rick Franklin; one brother, James Franklin and four sisters, Gladys Crabtree, Lois Fennimore and twin sisters, Bonnie Larson and Betty Haag.

Vernon had worked out of Laborer’s Local 165 in Peoria and Laborer’s Local 231 in Pekin for over 40 years, retiring in 1991.

An avid St. Louis Cardinals and Bradley Braves basketball fan, Vernon loved cross-stitching quilts and he made over 80 quilts with his wife after his retirement.

Vernon was a member of Peoria Seventh-day Adventist Church, where he served as a deacon for many years. He was also active in the Pathfinder Club as a leader and counselor.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday, January 29, 2018 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Pastor Don Lewis and Head Elder, Dave Storlie will officiate. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the funeral home. Burial will be at Meadow Lawn Cemetery in Manito.
