Dennis H. Montgomery

MANITO ~ Dennis Howard Montgomery, 80, of Manito, joined the Lord’s Army on Monday, February 26, 2018 in Gainesville, Florida.
Born October 14, 1937 in South Pekin to Howard and Gretchen (Trenholm) Montgomery, he married Lynn Martin on April 7, 1969 in Reno, Nevada. She survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Lora (Chris) Kemper, Melissa (Steve) Baker, and Michelle (Wayne) Hasty, all of Manito; one son, Stephen (Lisa) Binash of Huntsville, Alabama; eight grandchildren, Amanda (Tyler) Biggs of Peoria, Andrew Baker of Manito, Brielle (Greg) Faloona of Pontiac, Delaney Clark of Peoria, Mikayla Montgomery of Pekin, Zakery Kemper of Manito, Rhian Baker of Edwardsville, and Mark Kemper of Marquette Heights; and one sister, Kathy Tibbs of Pekin.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Gerald Montgomery.
A 1955 graduate of Pekin Community High School, he received his degree in History from the University of Illinois. He currently was working towards a Master’s degree in Military History.
Dennis served in the United States Marine Corps from 1956 to 1960. He later served in the United States Army from 1960 until retiring with an honorable discharge on March 31, 1977 with the rank of First Sergeant. He had served in Special Forces, completed two tours in the Vietnam War and received the Bronze Star.
Following his military retirement, Dennis was a grain buyer for Louis Dreyfus Company and later was a permanent substitute and JROTC instructor at Limestone Community High School in Bartonville for several years until 2008.
He was a life member of the Havana Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6408, a former member of the Masonic Lodge in Peoria, and was of the Methodist faith.
Dennis enjoyed traveling, bike touring, reading, and was a history buff. He loved being with his family and storytelling with his grandchildren. He has now gone onto a new adventure.
A service celebrating Dennis’ life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2018 at First United Methodist Church in Green Valley. Pastor Heather Robertson will officiate. Burial will follow at Woodrow Cemetery in rural Pekin, where military rites will be accorded. The family will receive friends following the burial at the church.
