PEKIN ~ Leonard Joseph Schwarz, 90, of Pekin, passed away at 6:43 a.m. Thursday, March 8, 2018 at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria.
Born March 31, 1927 in Kewanee to Jacob Magnus and Clara Elody (Standaert) Schwarz, he married Wilma Lavone Lathrop on September 17, 1948 in Cambridge. She died February 22, 2017 in Pekin. He was also preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Nyckie Gorman; three brothers and three sisters.
Surviving are three daughters, Rebecca (Richard) Stone of Eufaula, Alabama, Judy Kay Wilson of Pekin and Penny Jo (Les) Wright of Washington; six grandchildren, Jason (Carrie) Stone, Cameron (Lorraine) Stone, Troy (Brandy) Watkins, Brent Watkins, Kimberly (Christopher) Wolfe, and Angie (Bob) Bonjour; eight great-grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; one sister, Delores Rodriguez of Kewanee; and many nieces and nephews.
Leonard had served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Aleutian Islands and the South Pacific. He was a member of the Martin-Courtney Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4835 in Creve Coeur.
He retired from Pekin & Peoria Union Railroads in 1989, where he was a car inspector for 39 years.
Leonard enjoyed wood carving, hunting, fishing, bowling at Sunset Lanes and watching westerns.
He was a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin.
His funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 12, 2018 at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin with Father Michael Andrejek as the celebrant. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin, where military rites will be accorded by the United States Navy and Tazewell Area Ceremonial Team
