Powell J. Hughes

PEKIN ~ Powell J. Hughes, 91, of Pekin, passed away at 11:35 a.m. Thursday, March 29, 2018 at his home.
Born September 22, 1926 in Pekin to Powell Barlow and Iva Pearl (Belk) Hughes, he married Shirley Jeanne Wolf in Pekin. They later divorced.
Surviving are one son, Richard (Paula) Kohtz of Maineville, OH and several cousins, among them are Thelma Mathisen of New London, WI, Margaret Alexander of Pekin, Nancy Burlingame of Pekin, and Dan Belk of Pekin.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant brother, William Gerald Hughes in 1929 and one sister, Virginia Louise Hughes in 1938.
Powell was a 1944 graduate of Pekin Community High School and was the President of his fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon at Iowa Wesleyan University.
Powell served in the United States Navy from June 1944 to June 1946 and was on active duty in the Asia-Pacific theater during World War II.
He was employed by the United States Government in Washington D.C. from 1952 to 1976 and worked on several international assignments throughout his career.
Powell spent several years of retirement in Sarasota FL before returning to Pekin where he resided in his final years.
An avid reader of books and magazines, Powell was also a huge NFL football fan.
His graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, April 6, 2018 at Mount Gilead Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Scottsville, Kentucky.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.
