Delbert R. Simon

PEKIN ~ Delbert R. Simon, 90, of Pekin, passed away at 3:20 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at Pekin Manor.  He was formerly of Rockford.

He was born August 7, 1927 in Burwell, Nebraska to Oscar and Annie (Renneke) Simon.

Surviving are three sons, Rick (Debbie) Simon of Pekin, Brett (Brittany) Simon of Deer Park and Scott Simon of Chicago; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and one brother, Bill Simon of Columbia, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, David Simon; two brothers and one sister.

He served in the United States Army following World War II.

A graduate of Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa with his Bachelor’s Degree, Del also earned his Master’s Degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and his Doctorate from the University of Iowa School of Music.

His passion was music and he enjoyed a career as a college professor with time spent in Flint, Michigan, Western Washington State College and Eastern Illinois University.  He was an exceptional tenor and loved to perform in musicals and operas.  His passion for music was followed closely by being an Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago Cubs fan.  He was grateful to see the Cubs win the World Series.

A visitation will be at 4 p.m. Friday, April 6, 2018 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin, where a brief memorial service will follow at 4:30 p.m.  Patrick Andresen, Director of Pastoral Care at UnityPoint Health Peoria will officiate.  Private inurnment will be in Cottonwood Cemetery in Burwell, Nebraska.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to UnityPoint Hospice, 221 Northeast Glen Oak Avenue, Peoria, IL 61636.
