James L. Campbell, Sr.

PEKIN ~ James LeRoy Campbell, Sr., 76, of Pekin, passed away at 5:24 a.m. Sunday, April 15, 2018 at UnityPoint Health – Methodist in Peoria. 

Born January 16, 1942 in Gilman to Ellis B. and Leona J. (Pence) Campbell, he married Rosemarie Erika “Rose” Heinz on August 1, 1964 in Long Beach, California.  She died February 2, 2016.  He was also preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Skip Campbell and Zeke Templeman; and one sister, Pudge Wofford.

Surviving are four daughters, Sheryll (Husain) Mairza of Kuwait, Debra (Brad) Barnard and Tammy (Max) Damarin, both of Pekin, and Lisa Campbell of Jasonville, Indiana; one son, James (Rachel) Campbell, Jr. of Crawfordsville, Indiana; sixteen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; one brother, Jerry (Ruth) Campbell of Green Valley; two sisters, Sharon (Jerry) Hedrick of East Peoria and Janie Smith of Oden; and two sisters-in-law, Virginia “Setter” Templeman of Texas and Lottie Campbell of Arkansas. 

A United States Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, he served from March 1, 1960 to June 10, 1966.  He had been a part of the last atomic bomb test.  He participated in a Greater Peoria Honor Flight in May of 2016.  He was proud to be a veteran.

Jim worked at Caterpillar, Inc. for 43 years, retiring in 2007 as a millwright at the Mapleton Foundry.

He was a life member of the George Maple Memorial AMVETS Post #235 in Pekin.  He was a former member of the American Legion, Pekin Moose Family Center #916, and the Paul Towne Memorial AMVETS Post #169 in North Pekin, where he was a past commander.

Jim enjoyed fishing, traveling, woodworking, gardening, baking, and cooking.  He also enjoyed attending rummage sales, auctions, and road trips.

His funeral will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.  The Rev. Robert Barnard will officiate.  Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.  Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, where military rites will be accorded by the United States Navy and the Inter-Veterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
