Obituaries are so much more than a public notice that a friend or loved one has passed away.

Charles H. Maas

6/15/1931 - 5/2/2018

PEKIN ~ Charles Herman Maas, 86, of Pekin, passed away at 1 a.m. Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at Manor Care at Riverview in East Peoria.

Born June 15, 1931 in Pekin to John and Margaret Mary (Hoerr) Maas, he married Karen A. Baker on January 7, 1956 in Shelton, Washington.  She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Barbara Ann Maas of Pekin; one son, Charles Richard Maas of Green Valley; two grandchildren, Jody Marie Wilson of Pekin and Russell Lee (Amanda) Maas of Green Valley and two great-grandchildren, Evan James and Lexi Carol Wilson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Charles had farmed until going into the United States Army.  He served as Staff Sargent as a heavy equipment engineer in Korea, from December, 1953 until December, 1955.  After the Army, he worked for R.A. Cullinan & Sons Road Construction in Tremont.  He then worked for Manito Investment Co. at their sand pit, at the Topeka, IL sand plant.  He was a proud member of Operating Engineers Local #649 in Peoria for over 50 years.

He loved to talk to people and never knew a stranger.  In his younger years, he and Karen loved to ride their horses, both here and on organized trail rides in Missouri.  They enjoyed spending winters in Arizona and Texas in their camper and for many years, they were at Walt Disney World and Branson, Missouri since their early years of opening.  They have very fond memories of both places.

Charles is now with his beloved dog "Sport", who died of lonliness when Chuck went into the Army.  We are sure Sport was there to greet him at the Pearly Gates!

Private graveside services will be held.  There will be no visitation.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.
