Melvin "Doc" Lowery

MORTON ~ Melvin Dawayne “Doc” Lowery, 83, of Morton, passed away at 4:15 a.m. Friday, November 15, 2019 at his home. 

Born April 28, 1936 in Normal to Carl and Luella (Johnson) Lowery, he married Mary Elizabeth Vermillion on May 1, 1970 in Peoria.  She died October 10, 2009.  He was also preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Lois Herren; and one brother, Donald Lowery.

He later married Phyllis Dee on September 15, 2012 in Shirley.  She survives.  Also surviving are two daughters, Tina (Jim) Vance of Robein and Angela (Robert) Taylor of Ellsworth; three grandchildren, Karl Muehe, Jagur Muehe, and Tiffany (Richard) Bennett; three great-grandchildren, Lilly, Rylan, Jean-Luc; one brother, Leslie (Carol) Lowery of Macomb, Mississippi; and many nieces and nephews.

He was a United States Army veteran. Dawayne worked at Keystone Steel and Wire Company in Bartonville for 34 years, retiring in 1998. 

Since a young age, Dawayne loved to sing and entertain people.  He had a real passion for Christ.  He had led worship for many years at his former church, sang tenor in two gospel quartets, The Chariots and Southern Bound, for 11 years each.  At the age of 40, Doc picked up the love for ventriloquism.  He was well known for his ventriloquist show “Doc Lowery & Friends” that he performed all over Central Illinois and beyond.  He enjoyed visiting the local libraries to have a ventriloquist figure read a story to the children. He also performed for the senior citizens at the local UAW and nursing homes.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at Eastside Bible Church in Morton.  Pastor Steve Weber will officiate. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Wednesday at the church.  Burial will be at Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.  Arrangements are by Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.
