Obituaries are so much more than a public notice that a friend or loved one has passed away.

Raymond C. Whitman Jr.

7/22/1958 - 11/16/2019

Raymond “Big Ray” Clifford Whitman, Jr., 61, of St. David, Illinois, passed away Saturday, November 16, 2019 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Ray was born to Raymond Clifford and Mary Louise (Hale) Whitman on July 22, 1958 in Peoria. They preceded him in death.

He is survived by his four children; Raymond Clifford Whitman, III, Shane Lee Whitman, Nichole Whitman, and Ashleigh Horne, one brother; Leon Fivecoat, four sisters; Carol (Andy) Ragan, Star (Chris) Post, Dawn Taylor & Brenda (Coy) McKelvey, longtime companion, Ronda Moore, 10 grandchildren, and numerous nieces & nephews.

He graduated from East Peoria High School.

Ray was known for being a hard worker.  He was employed in various industries throughout his life. As a young man, he worked at American Allied Railway Equipment Company in Washington, IL.  Afterwards, he worked at Peoria Siding & Window Company.  Later in life, he worked as a mechanic and retired from Komatsu.

Ray was a big kid at heart who never took life too seriously. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, fishing, and spending time with his family.   Although he was famously late to every family function, the moment he arrived was always a “Ray of Sunshine.”  Family & friends will always remember his smile and his goofy sense of humor. Ray had a heart of gold.  He was a “do-anything-for-you” kind of person and never hesitated to help anyone.  He will be greatly missed, but will remain forever in our hearts.

A Celebration of Life gathering will be held on Saturday, November 30, 2019 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Creve Coeur Community Center, located at 586 Groveland Street.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 3000 Kelly Lane, Springfield, IL 62711.
