Obituaries are so much more than a public notice that a friend or loved one has passed away.

Jerry W. Watson

4/11/1946 - 9/6/2020

PEORIA ~ Jerry Wayne Watson, 74, of Peoria, passed away at 11:21 a.m. Sunday, September 6, 2020 at his home.  He was formerly of Pekin.

Born April 11, 1946 in Hannibal, Missouri to Darrell and Maxine (DeWeese) Watson, he married Sheila Kirkman on July 18, 1981 in Pekin.  She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Alissa Selburg of Dunlap; one son-in-law, Aaron Selburg of Dunlap; and two granddaughters, Lola Selburg and Sylvia Selburg.

He was preceded in death by his father, Darrell Watson; one step-son, Thomas Axley; and one cousin, Patricia O’Leary; and several pets whom he loved, but pretended not to like.

He had served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

Jerry worked at Caterpillar, Inc. for 33 years, retiring in 2002 as a quality control analyst.

He loved Motown, a good ribeye, classic cars, napping on the couch, waving at neighbors from the driveway, and Shrek. A native Peorian, Jerry also liked Velvet Freeze (Wonder Dogs), Davis Bros. pizza, and Big John’s ribs.

Although a tough exterior, Jerry had the kindest of hearts. He would go out of his way to improve the lives of not only those he knew, but also total strangers and animals. To honor his memory, we ask that you complete an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness.

After a long battle, Jerry is at peace now; hopefully making mischief in a 1961 corvette (his dream car). He will be missed dearly.

His visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, September 19, 2020 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.  Military rites will follow the visitation conducted by the United States Army.  Cremation will be accorded.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Tazewell Animal Protective Society, 100 TAPS Lane, Pekin, IL  61554 or to UnityPoint Hospice, 221 Northeast Glen Oak Avenue, Peoria, IL  61636.
